Varna is the largest city on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast and the third largest in the country. The gold objects found in 1972 in a cemetery uncovered in the city's industrial zone date to roughly 4600 to 4200 BC and are considered the oldest worked gold known anywhere. They are displayed today in the Archaeological Museum. A Greek colony called Odessos in antiquity, the city was left one of the largest Roman bath complexes in the region. An hour's flight from Turkey, Varna works as both a city break and a beach trip.

When to visit Varna

The swimming season runs from mid June to mid September, with daytime temperatures around 28C in July and August when the sea is warmest, though those months are also when the beaches are busiest. June and September are calmer and cheaper. November to March is windy and wet and the coastal businesses close, leaving the museums and Roman remains as the reason to come.

Varna Archaeological Museum

Varna Archaeological Museum

Founded in 1898, the museum holds the gold from the Varna Necropolis, dating back some six thousand years and weighing more than six kilograms in total, regarded as the earliest worked gold known. The same building holds a broad collection of Thracian, Greek and Roman stonework.

Roman Baths of Odessos

Roman Baths of Odessos

Built at the end of the 2nd century, the baths cover about 7,000 square metres and are the largest Roman building in Bulgaria and the fourth largest in the Balkans. The surviving brick arches and the channels of the heating system are visible, and the ruins sit right inside the centre among the streets.

Sea Garden

Sea Garden

Begun in 1878 and covering about 80 hectares, this is the largest urban park in Bulgaria and it links the city centre to the beach. It contains an aquarium opened in 1932, an observatory and an open air theatre, with a promenade running the length of the seafront.

Cathedral of the Assumption

Cathedral of the Assumption

Founded in 1886, the cathedral was among the first large churches built after Bulgaria emerged from Ottoman rule and it dominates the central square. Its domes and bell tower rise beyond 40 metres, and the iconostasis and stained glass inside were added in the early 20th century.

Golden Sands

Golden Sands

The resort area 17 kilometres north of the city takes its name from its fine pale sand, and the wooded slope behind it has been a national park since 1943. Hotels and beach clubs line the roughly 3.5 kilometre stretch of sand, half an hour from Varna by bus.

Aladzha Monastery

Aladzha Monastery

Cut into the limestone cliff just west of Golden Sands, the monastery came into use in the 12th century and can still be visited, with its cells, church and chapel rising over two levels. Its name comes from the Turkish word for mottled, and traces of 14th century frescoes survive on the walls.

Two days cover the museum, the Roman baths and the Sea Garden. For a beach holiday a week at Golden Sands works, and adding Nessebar and Balchik stretches the trip to four days.

How far is the airport from the city centre?

Varna Airport is about 8 kilometres from the centre. A city bus reaches town in 20 minutes, and the lines running to Golden Sands also pass the airport.
