Uralsk (Oral in Kazakh) is the centre of the West Kazakhstan region and one of the oldest cities in the country, a city of about 330,000 where the Ural and Chagan rivers meet. Cossacks founded it in 1613 as Yaitsk; during Pugachev's Rebellion of 1773 and 1774 the town was besieged for months, and in 1775 Catherine II renamed both the river and the town to erase the memory of the revolt. On the banks of the Ural, traditionally counted as the boundary between Europe and Asia, Uralsk is one of the few Kazakh cities that lie geographically in Europe. Pushkin came here in 1833 to research the history of Pugachev; the 18th century cathedral, the wooden houses of the Cossack era and the riverside are the historical and natural sides of a visit.

Late May to June and late August to September are the easiest periods: days of 20C to 28C and comfortable walks and boat trips along the river. In July the steppe can pass 30C and the sandy beaches on the Ural fill up. Winter is long and harsh; in January the temperature stays well below zero on most days, the river freezes and the season for ice skating and skiing begins. Things to do in Uralsk

Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (Golden Church)

Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (Golden Church)

The cathedral, whose foundation stone was laid in 1891 for the 300th anniversary of the Ural Cossack army's service to the Moscow tsar, was only completed in 1907 because of shortfalls in the Cossack treasury. It is known locally as the Golden Church; with its brick facade, domes and the inscription on the front recalling the founding date of the Cossack army, it is the emblem of the city. It is open for worship today and is visible from every direction in the old town. Its facade photographs best in late afternoon light.

Cathedral of Archangel Michael

Cathedral of Archangel Michael

Completed in 1751, the cathedral is the oldest surviving building in Uralsk and stands in the old Cossack core of the city. It was once surrounded by a fortress wall; during Pugachev's Rebellion the besieged government troops held out in these fortifications and the rebels never took them. With its plain body, domes and bell tower it is an 18th century example of old Russian provincial architecture. The old streets around it connect to the Pugachev Museum in a short walk.

Pugachev House Museum

Pugachev House Museum

The 18th century wooden house on Dostyk Avenue belonged to Pyotr Kuznetsov, a Ural Cossack who took part in the rebellion; Yemelyan Pugachev married his 17 year old daughter Ustinya in this house in February 1774. Now a museum, it shows the interior of the period, portraits of Pugachev and his followers, swords, cannonballs and the gifts Catherine II gave to the commanders who crushed the revolt. It is the right place to see the background of Pushkin's novel The Captain's Daughter. An hour is enough.

Pushkin Museum (Ataman's House)

Pushkin Museum (Ataman's House)

Built around 1830 to a design by the Italian architect Dilmedino, the mansion was the home of V. O. Pokatilov, ataman of the Ural Cossacks; Alexander Pushkin arrived from Orenburg in September 1833, stayed here for three days and talked with old Cossacks who had witnessed Pugachev's Rebellion. Now a literary museum, the house tells of the poet's journey, objects of the period and the 19th century life of Uralsk. Its classical facade is among the most elegant in the old town. The nearby Nurpeisova pedestrian street fits into the same walk.

Kazakh Drama Theatre

Kazakh Drama Theatre

The modern Kazakh Drama Theatre in the city centre, with its curved golden facade, is one of the most striking new buildings in Uralsk and the Kazakh language stage of West Kazakhstan. The same walk through the centre can include the house museum, opened in 1982, of Manshuk Mametova, the first Kazakh woman to be made a Hero of the Soviet Union in the Second World War; the city's airport has also borne her name since 2022. Check the box office in advance for the programme.

Ural River

Ural River

Rising in the southern Ural Mountains and flowing into the Caspian Sea, the Ural (Zhaiyk in Kazakh) is joined by the Chagan River at Uralsk and is traditionally counted as the boundary between Europe and Asia. The tree lined sandy beaches on the town side are places for swimming and picnics in summer; boats are rowed along the river and anglers line the bank early in the morning. In winter the river freezes and people skate on it. From the bridge to the far bank the city skyline and the water between two continents come into view.
