Timisoara is the centre of the Banat region in western Romania, and its Turkish name comes straight from the Ottoman period: the city was taken in 1552 and served as the seat of the Eyalet of Temesvar until 1716. The Habsburg century that followed set the fabric you see today, the yellow and pastel facades around its squares. In 1884 it became the first city in Europe to light its streets with electricity. The first protests against the Ceausescu regime broke out here in December 1989, and in 2023 Timisoara was European Capital of Culture.

May to September is the easiest stretch, with daytime temperatures between 22C and 30C and the terraces on the squares open. July and August can push past 35C, so mornings and evenings are the comfortable hours for walking. A Christmas market fills Union Square in December, while January and February are cold and foggy with temperatures below freezing.

Union Square
The baroque heart of the city is ringed by coloured facades of the 18th century. The Roman Catholic episcopal cathedral and the Serbian Orthodox cathedral face each other across the same square, and the plague column in the middle dates from the 1740s.
Huniade Castle
The oldest surviving building in the city was founded in the 14th century under the Angevin kings and rebuilt by John Hunyadi in the 15th. It now houses the Museum of the Banat, whose collection runs from the region's prehistory through the Ottoman and Habsburg periods.
Metropolitan Cathedral
Built between 1936 and 1946, the Orthodox cathedral reinterprets Moldavian monastery architecture at a modern scale, and its 83 metre tower defines the skyline. A collection of icons gathered from churches across the Banat is displayed on its lower floor.
Theresia Bastion
The largest surviving piece of the star shaped fortress the Habsburgs built in the 18th century, and among the widest preserved bastions in central Europe. The spaces under its brick vaults have been restored and now hold museum sections, cafes and exhibition halls.
Bega Canal
Opened in 1728, the canal is one of the oldest artificial waterways in Europe and once linked the city to the Danube. A walking and cycling path runs along it through the centre, and in summer small passenger boats connect the middle of town with the parks.
Rose Park
Laid out in 1891, the park carries the city's tradition of rose growing and once held more than a thousand varieties. Sitting on the bank of the Bega, it now doubles as an open air stage, and June is when the beds are at their fullest.

Direct flights to Timisoara from Turkey leave from Istanbul: Turkish Airlines opened the route on 1 April 2026 and runs seven flights a week. The flight takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. Traian Vuia Airport is roughly 12 kilometres northeast of the centre, with a bus link into town. Connecting through Bucharest is possible, but with a near daily nonstop it is rarely worth it.

How far is the airport from the city centre?
Traian Vuia Airport is about 12 kilometres from the centre. The airport bus reaches town in around 30 minutes and a taxi takes about 20, depending on traffic.
Do you need a visa for Romania?
Romania joined the Schengen area for air and sea borders in 2024 and for land borders in 2025. A Turkish passport needs a Schengen visa obtained in advance. Appointments get harder to find in summer, so it is safer to start the application at least two months before travel.
