Taipei is the capital of Taiwan, set in a basin at the north of the island with mountains on three sides. Its emblem is Taipei 101: at 508 metres it was the tallest building in the world between 2004 and 2010, and the 660 tonne pendulum inside damps the sway in earthquakes and typhoons. The city's other face is in the National Palace Museum, whose collection rests on the imperial holdings brought from the mainland in 1949 and is among the most complete gatherings of Chinese art anywhere. In the evening life moves to the night markets.
