Sydney is Australia's most populous city and the capital of New South Wales. It spreads along the inlets of Port Jackson, and two structures carry the whole skyline: the Sydney Opera House, opened in 1973 and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, completed in 1932. The centre is walkable, ferries are part of the public transport network, and coastal paths link the beaches. Being in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are the reverse of Türkiye's: December to February is summer.

September to November in spring and March to May in autumn are the most balanced periods, with temperatures between 18C and 25C. December to February is summer, the beach season, and the busiest time in the city. Things to do in Sydney

Sydney Opera House

Sydney Opera House

Designed by the Danish architect Jørn Utzon, the building opened in 1973 and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2007. Its sail shaped shells are clad in more than a million ceramic tiles, and inside there is a concert hall, an opera theatre and further stages, with guided tours during the day.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

Sydney Harbour Bridge

Opened in 1932, the steel arch bridge links the two sides of the harbour and is the city's oldest landmark. The pedestrian walkway is free, and the Pylon Lookout in the south eastern pier gives a view over the harbour and the opera house from above.

Bondi Beach

Bondi Beach

The kilometre of sand east of the centre is Australia's best known beach and one of the birthplaces of its surf lifesaving tradition. The six kilometre coastal walk from here to Coogee passes coves and ocean pools along the way.

Royal Botanic Garden Sydney

Royal Botanic Garden Sydney

Founded in 1816, the garden runs along the headland beside the opera house and is one of Australia's oldest scientific institutions. Entry is free, and the rock ledge at its tip known as Mrs Macquarie's Chair is the classic viewpoint that frames the opera house and the bridge together.

Queen Victoria Building

Queen Victoria Building

Built as a market in 1898 in Romanesque revival style, the building runs the length of a city block and is used as a shopping arcade today. The central dome, the stained glass windows and the hanging clock survive from the original.

Taronga Zoo

Taronga Zoo

Opened in 1916, the zoo sits on a hillside on the north shore of the harbour and keeps Australian species including koalas, kangaroos and Tasmanian devils. It is reached by ferry from the centre, and its terraces look back at the city skyline.

Sydney FAQ

How many days do you need in Sydney?

Four days cover the harbour, the opera house, the botanic garden and Bondi. Adding day trips such as the Blue Mountains and the Hunter Valley makes a week a comfortable programme. The flight is long, so a short stay is inefficient.

How far is the airport from the city centre?

Kingsford Smith Airport is about 8 kilometres from the centre, to the south of the city. The airport line train reaches the centre in around 15 minutes.

What do you need to enter Australia?

A visa is required for a Turkish passport, and the visitor visa application is made online before travel. The visa is electronic, with no label placed in the passport. Australia has strict rules on bringing in food and plants, and a declaration form is completed on arrival.
