Ohrid is a town in southwestern North Macedonia, on the northeastern shore of the lake that shares its name. It is one of the few places inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list under both natural and cultural criteria: Lake Ohrid shelters endemic species surviving from the Tertiary period, while the town is known for churches built between the 7th and 19th centuries and more than 800 Byzantine style icons from the 11th to the 14th century. Samuel's Fortress on the hill and the church of St John at Kaneo on the cliff above the water are the two emblems of the town. Seen from Turkey it is one of the shortest lake holidays in the Balkans.

June to September is the season when the lake is warm enough to swim, with water temperatures reaching 22C to 24C in August. The Ohrid Summer Festival, from mid July to mid August, brings the busiest weeks and accommodation fills early then. Late May, early June and late September are quieter, with daytime temperatures between 22C and 27C. November to March is wet and part of the lakeside businesses close.
Things to do in Ohrid
Church of St John at Kaneo
The 13th century church stands on a rock that drops straight into the lake and is the most photographed building in Ohrid. Its plan mixes Byzantine and Armenian architecture, and the frescoes inside show angels in royal robes, a depiction that is rare in the Balkans.
Samuel's Fortress
The fortress on the highest point of the town takes its name from Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria in the late 10th century, and walking its ramparts gives a view over the whole lake and old town. Excavations have shown that its foundations go back to the Hellenistic period.
Sveti Naum Monastery
Founded in 905 at the southern end of the lake near the Albanian border, the monastery holds the tomb of its founder Saint Naum. The springs beside it feed the lake, and it lies about 29 kilometres from the town, reachable by boat in summer.
Ancient Theatre of Ohrid
Built around 200 BC, this is the only Hellenistic theatre surviving in North Macedonia. It was used for gladiator fights in Roman times and today serves as the open air stage of the summer festival, with the lake visible from the seats.
Plaosnik and the Church of St Clement
The terrace between the fortress and the lake is the site of the Ohrid Literary School founded by Saint Clement in the 9th century, counted among the first universities of the Slavic world. The mosaic floors of the early Christian basilica and the rebuilt church are visited together.
Lake Ohrid
At roughly two to three million years old, the lake is among the oldest and clearest in Europe, 288 metres at its deepest with visibility down to 20 metres. A large share of its species live nowhere else, which is why it is protected under the natural heritage criterion as well.

How many days do you need in Ohrid?

How far is the airport from the town centre?
Ohrid St Paul the Apostle Airport is about 9 kilometres from the centre, a 15 minute drive. The airport is small, so taxis follow flight times and arranging a transfer in advance is the practical option.
Do you need a visa for North Macedonia?
No visa is required for a Turkish passport for tourism, and stays of up to 90 days are allowed. The passport only needs to be valid from the date of entry. The currency is the Macedonian denar and euros are not accepted everywhere.
