Norrköping is an industrial city 160 kilometres southwest of Stockholm, built on the Motala stream where it empties into the Bråviken inlet. It grew in the 19th century as the textile centre of Sweden, the falls of the stream turning hundreds of looms; when the mills closed in the 1970s the buildings were not demolished but reopened as a university campus, museums and a concert hall. The tram network in the centre has run without a break since 1904, and this is one of only three Swedish cities that still has one. The population is around 145,000, and the seasonal direct flight from Antalya is the shortest way to Sweden's east coast in summer.

Things to do in Norrköping

The Industrial Landscape

The Industrial Landscape

Along the stretch of the Motala stream that runs through the centre, 19th century textile mills stand one after another at the water's edge. Footbridges above the falls look onto brick facades, turbine channels and the former paper mill that is now the Louis De Geer concert hall. Evening lighting makes this the most photographed corner of the city.

Kolmården Wildlife Park

Kolmården Wildlife Park

Thirty kilometres northeast of the city, on a wooded hill above the Bråviken inlet, the park opened in 1965 and is the largest wildlife park in Scandinavia. A cable car passing over the tiger, lion and polar bear enclosures serves as the park's own transport line, and the wooden roller coaster Wildfire is among the tallest in Europe. A full day is needed for the visit.

Museum of Work

Museum of Work

The seven storey building on a small island in the middle of the stream is known as the Iron (Strykjärnet) because of its shape and was built as a cotton mill in 1917. Since 1991 it has been the museum of Swedish working life, with exhibitions running from the daily lives of the women weavers to the workplaces of today. Entry is free and the top floor cafe looks over the stream.

Himmelstalund Rock Carvings

Himmelstalund Rock Carvings

On the Himmelstalund meadows three kilometres west of the centre, more than 1,600 figures were cut into flat rock faces in the Bronze Age: ships, footprints, animals and sun wheels. The figures are painted red so they can be seen, and the site is a free, open park. A walking path runs along the Motala stream right beside it.

Carl Johans Park

Carl Johans Park

The park in front of the railway station is known for the more than 25,000 cacti planted into the ground every summer; the patterns change each year and the planting is a tradition that dates from the 1930s. A statue of King Karl XIV Johan stands in the middle of the park. The main shopping street, Drottninggatan, starts here and the tram stop is on the edge of the park.

Norrköping Art Museum

Norrköping Art Museum

The museum on Kristinaplatsen square opened in 1946 and its collection concentrates on Swedish modernism, in particular painting from the early 20th century. The square in front of the building and the city library beside it form the cultural core of Norrköping. It is ten minutes on foot from the centre and the tram line passes its door.

How far is the airport from the city centre?

Norrköping Airport is about 3 kilometres from the centre. The city bus reaches the centre in ten minutes and a taxi takes five to ten minutes. This is one of the Swedish cities where the airport is closest to the centre.

Do you need a visa for Sweden?
