Memmingen lies in southwestern Bavaria at the northern gate of the Allgau. It was a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire, and that past is still legible in its fabric: much of the wall and its tower gates survive, and the Steuerhaus on the market square dates from 1495. The town entered the history books with the Twelve Articles drawn up here in 1525, counted among the first written statements of human rights in Europe. May to September is the season in the region, with daytime temperatures between 18C and 26C and the walking trails of the Allgau uplands open. The Fischertag tradition in late July is the town's busiest day. A Christmas market fills the old town in December. January to March is cold, and the ski season at the nearby Alpine resorts runs through those months.
Things to do in Memmingen
Steuerhaus and Marktplatz
Facing the main square, the Steuerhaus was built in 1495 as the tax and grain house, and its arcaded ground floor and the band of frescoes above are its signature. The Renaissance town hall stands on the other side of the square, and together the two mark out the town's medieval trading centre.
Siebendacherhaus
Built in 1601, the House of Seven Roofs takes its name from the seven stepped roof levels, which were open galleries the tanners used for drying hides. It was badly damaged in 1945 and rebuilt to its original plan, and is now the most photographed house in the town.
St Martin's Church
The oldest church in the town took its present late Gothic form in the 15th century, and its 65 metre tower can be climbed for a view over the old town and, in clear weather, the Alps. The choir stalls carved between 1501 and 1507 carry hundreds of portrait reliefs.
Westertor and the town walls
Memmingen is one of the few German towns to have kept most of its medieval wall, and the circuit can be walked all the way round. The Westertor, the western gate, still stands with its tower, and the moat inside the wall still runs as a water channel.
Hermansbau
The mansion built in 1766 for the patrician Benedikt von Herman is the most ornate secular baroque building in the town, inside and out. It now houses the Memmingen city museum, whose displays run from prehistory to the guild and church history of the town and describe daily life in the free imperial city.
Neuschwanstein Castle
About 100 kilometres southeast of Memmingen, the castle King Ludwig II of Bavaria began in 1869 sits on a rock spur at the foot of the Alps. It was never finished before the king died and part of the interior remains bare. Tickets must be booked in advance and it is visited as a day trip.
