Maputo is the capital and largest city of Mozambique, a port city of more than a million people on the western shore of Maputo Bay, an hour from the South African border. Known as Lourenço Marques in the Portuguese period, the city became the colonial capital in 1898 and took its present name after independence in 1975. Today Maputo, with its wide avenues and its Art Deco and modernist buildings, is one of the most architecturally interesting capitals in Africa; many of its streets carry the names of the independence era, such as Mao, Lenin or Karl Marx. The station, the fortress and the market in the Baixa district are the urban side of a visit; Inhaca Island in the bay and Maputo National Park to the south are the nature side.

Things to do in Maputo

Maputo Central Railway Station

Maputo Central Railway Station

The station in the Baixa opened in 1910; with its green and cream facade and copper clad dome rising to 51 metres, it is counted among the most beautiful railway stations in Africa. The dome is often attributed to Gustave Eiffel, but the design was by the Portuguese engineer José Ferreira da Costa. The station still works, its waiting halls and platforms can be visited and old steam locomotives are displayed on the platform. The square in front and the market streets of the Baixa fit into the same walk.

Maputo Fortress

Maputo Fortress

The red stone fortress at the bay end of the Baixa stands on the site of the first Portuguese fortification on the bay, from the late 18th century; it took its present form in a reconstruction in 1940. Since 1975 it has been in the care of Eduardo Mondlane University and is a museum on the history of colonial occupation and resistance. In the courtyard a carved wooden coffin holds the remains of Ngungunhane, the last emperor of Gaza who resisted the Portuguese, returned from the Azores in 1985. The garden within the walls is a quiet break.

Maputo Cathedral

Maputo Cathedral

The Cathedral of Nossa Senhora da Conceição on Independence Square was begun in 1936 and completed in 1944, designed by the engineer Marcial Simões de Freitas e Costa, then a railway director. With its brilliant white concrete and 61 metre bell tower it is a modernist building, and its interior is plain and bright. The city hall and the statue of Samora Machel on the same square fit into the same frame. The nearby Casa de Ferro, a 19th century house of prefabricated iron plates, continues the walk.

Natural History Museum

Natural History Museum

Housed since 1933 in an ornate Neo-Manueline building, the museum was founded in 1911 and reopened after renovation in autumn 2025. The best known part of the collection is its series of elephant foetuses showing the 22 months of elephant gestation month by month; alongside it are mounted mammals, thousands of bird and insect specimens and Mozambican ethnographic pieces. The large trees in the garden and the facade of the building are photogenic in their own right. An hour or two is enough.

Casa de Ferro (the Iron House)

Casa de Ferro (the Iron House)

This prefabricated iron house beside the Tunduru Gardens was made in Belgium in 1892 using the Danly system and shipped out to be the residence of the governor of the Lourenço Marques district. Because the metal shell trapped the tropical heat, the governor never moved in; in later years the building served as a court, a missionary school and colonial offices. It is often attributed to Gustave Eiffel, but the design is the system of the Belgian Joseph Danly. It was restored in 2014 and now houses offices of the Ministry of Culture; its facade and lace-like iron railings can be seen up close.

Maputo National Park

Maputo National Park

About 100 kilometres south east of the city, the park was formed in 2021 by merging the Maputo Special Reserve, founded in 1932 as an elephant reserve, with the Ponta do Ouro marine reserve, and it joined the UNESCO World Heritage list in July 2025. Elephants, giraffes, zebras and hippos live among coastal forests, lakes and dunes, and leatherback and loggerhead turtles nest on its beaches between November and February. The road became shorter after the Katembe bridge opened; it is reached by four wheel drive and needs at least one night.

Flights from Turkey to Maputo

Flights to Maputo from Turkey leave Istanbul Airport on Turkish Airlines; the service is one flight but not nonstop: it stops in Johannesburg and continues to Maputo on the same aircraft. It runs three days a week, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, departing after midnight; the flight to Johannesburg takes about 10 hours and the hop on to Maputo 1 hour 15 minutes, so the whole journey is about 12 and a half hours, arriving around midday. Maputo FAQ

How many days do you need in Maputo?

A day for the station, the fortress, the cathedral and the market in the Baixa and half a day for the Natural History Museum and the Avenida Marginal seafront are enough. Inhaca Island takes a day and Maputo National Park at least one night. Plan three nights for the city alone and a week with the island and the park; adding Kruger National Park stretches it to ten days.

How far is the airport from the city centre?

Maputo International Airport is about 3 kilometres north west of the city centre. A taxi or hotel transfer takes 15 to 20 minutes, and the taxi fare is agreed before getting in. As arrival is around midday, sightseeing in the centre can start the same day.

Do you need a visa for Mozambique?

A Turkish passport is not on Mozambique's visa exempt list; instead the electronic travel authorisation (ETA) in place since 2023 is obtained online before travel from the official evisa.gov.mz site, allowing a 30 day stay that can be extended by 30 days if needed. A yellow fever vaccination card is only required when arriving from a country where the disease occurs, and malaria precautions are planned with a doctor.
