Luanda is the capital of Angola and the most populous Portuguese speaking city in Africa. Founded in 1576, it spreads around a wide bay, and the sand spit that closes the bay, Ilha do Cabo, is the city's weekend shore with its beaches. The Fortress of São Miguel on the hill dates from 1576 and is used today as the armed forces museum, with a view over the whole bay. The seafront road known as the Marginal was rebuilt in 2012 and became the city's walking axis. Portuguese is the official language, and semba is the city's own musical form.

Things to do in Luanda
Fortress of São Miguel
Built in 1576 with the founding of the city, the fortress was the seat of Portuguese administration for centuries. Its thick walls and the tiled panels in its courtyard have been preserved, and it serves today as the Armed Forces Museum, with the bay and the harbour visible from its ramparts.
The Marginal
The seafront road along the bay, officially Avenida 4 de Fevereiro, was rebuilt in 2012 with wide pedestrian areas and palms. The banks of the centre and the colonial era buildings line it, and the city comes here to walk in the evening.
Ilha do Cabo
The long sand spit closing the bay is joined to the mainland by a road and is the city's beach strip. Calm bay water lies on one side and the open Atlantic on the other, with fish restaurants and beach clubs along its length.
Miradouro da Lua
On the coast road about 40 kilometres south of the city, cliffs of red rock cut by wind and rain drop steeply towards the ocean. The name comes from the lunar look of the surface, and it is at its most striking at sunset.
Palácio de Ferro
Cast in sections in Europe in the 19th century, shipped out and assembled in Luanda, the iron framed building was long attributed to Gustave Eiffel's workshop. After years of dereliction it was restored and now serves as an exhibition space.
Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios
Built in 1655, the baroque church is one of the oldest places of worship in the city and stands with its white facade on a square in the centre. The wooden altar and the statues of saints inside survive from the colonial period.
