Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre
Opened in 1952 as a zoo, the centre now cares for and rehabilitates rescued animals. Lions, rhinos, chimpanzees and shoebills are kept in large enclosures along the lakeshore, and most animals recovered from poaching are brought here.
Entebbe Botanical Gardens
Laid out in 1898, the gardens cover about 40 hectares on the shore of Lake Victoria and bring together different belts of equatorial vegetation. They are one of the most productive spots in Entebbe for birdwatchers, and colobus monkeys are often seen in the trees.
Kasubi Tombs
Inside Kampala, about 35 kilometres from Entebbe, this is the burial ground of the kings of Buganda and it entered the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2001. The thatched main building, Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, burned down in a fire in 2010. Its reconstruction was completed in the summer of 2023 and the site was taken off the World Heritage in Danger list the same year.
Lake Victoria
The largest lake in Africa by area, Victoria is shared between Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania and is one of the sources of the Nile. Boats leaving the Entebbe shore run to fishing villages and lake islands, and the storm clouds crossing the water at sunset are a familiar sight from the town.
Mabamba Bay Wetland
The papyrus swamp along an inlet of Lake Victoria is protected under the Ramsar convention and is the best known place in East Africa to see the shoebill in the wild. Trips are made by canoe through narrow channels and usually set out early in the morning.
Kayabwe Equator monument
Two white rings on the road between Kampala and Masaka, about 70 kilometres from Entebbe, mark the point where the equator crosses. Roadside stops demonstrate the draining water experiment and craft stalls line the verge, making it a natural break on the way to the parks.
