Aarhus sits on the east coast of Jutland and is the largest city in Denmark after the capital. It goes back to a Viking settlement of the 8th century, and remains from that period have been found beneath the centre. Today it is above all a university city, with students making up a large share of the population. June to August is the easiest stretch, with daytime temperatures between 18C and 22C and more than 17 hours of daylight in June. The sea stays cool, so this is a city and nature trip rather than a beach one. Aarhus Festuge in early September is the liveliest week of the year. November to February is dark, windy and cold, with daylight down to seven hours in December.

ARoS Aarhus Art Museum
Opened in 2004, the ten storey museum is among the largest art museums in Scandinavia. Your Rainbow Panorama on its roof, completed by Olafur Eliasson in 2011, is a circular walkway that shows the city through coloured glass, and the floors below hold a collection running from Danish Golden Age painting to contemporary installation.
Den Gamle By
The open air town museum opened in 1914 is made up of more than 75 historic buildings dismantled elsewhere in Denmark and rebuilt here. It recreates three separate periods, 1864, 1927 and 1974, with the shops, workshops and homes of each kept in working order along its streets.
Moesgaard Museum
The museum south of the city opened in 2014, set into the landscape under a sloping grass roof. The best known piece in its collection is the preserved body of Grauballe Man, found in a bog in 1952 and dating back some 2,300 years, and the displays run from Danish prehistory to the Viking age.
Aarhus Cathedral
Begun in the 12th century and given its Gothic form in the 15th, the cathedral is the longest and tallest church in Denmark at 93 metres long with a 96 metre tower. Frescoes from before the Reformation survive on its walls, and the carved altarpiece of 1479 behind the altar is the work of Bernt Notke.
Dokk1
Opened on the harbour front in 2015, Dokk1 is the largest public library in Scandinavia and works as much like a civic square as a library. Its glass wrapped floors look out over the port and the bay, and the quayside in front of it is the centrepiece of the redevelopment that reconnected the city centre with the water.
Marselisborg Palace
Completed in 1902, the palace is the summer residence of the Danish royal family and stands on the wooded coastal strip south of the city. When the family is not in residence its garden of about 13 hectares opens to the public, with sculptures and rose beds to walk among.
Flights from Turkey to Aarhus
Direct flights to Aarhus from Turkey leave from Antalya: Pegasus opened the route in May 2025 and runs it twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays. The flight takes about 3 hours 55 minutes. Aarhus Airport is at Tirstrup, roughly 40 kilometres northeast of the city, about 50 minutes in on the airport bus. From Istanbul it is common to fly into Copenhagen and continue by train, about three hours, and Billund is another option an hour away by road.

Two days cover the centre, ARoS and Den Gamle By. A third day suits the Moesgaard Museum and the Marselisborg woods, and adding Skagen and Aalborg in northern Jutland stretches the trip to five days.
How far is the airport from the city centre?
Aarhus Airport is about 40 kilometres from the centre, so it is not a close in airport. The airport bus, timed to the flights, reaches the main station in town in 50 minutes, and Billund is an alternative.
Do you need a visa for Denmark?
Denmark is in the Schengen area and a Turkish passport needs a Schengen visa obtained in advance. Appointments get harder to find in summer, so it is safer to start the application at least two months before travel.
