June to September is the easiest period: the weather is mild, the sea is warm enough for swimming in July and August and the coast at Amasra and Filyos comes alive in these months. May and October are the months when the forests are at their greenest and most colourful and crowds are thin; they suit the caves and museums well. The western Black Sea gets rain all year, with autumn and winter the wettest seasons; winters are cool and damp and fog is common on the hillside roads. Even in summer, keep a rain jacket or a cardigan to hand.
Things to do in Zonguldak
Gökgöl Cave
Just outside the city centre on the Ankara road, the cave is one of the longest in Turkey at 3,350 metres and opened to visitors in 2001. A lit 875 metre walkway passes between stalactites, stalagmites, columns and curtain formations, and in the wet season an underground stream runs through it. It stays cool inside all year, so an extra layer is useful even in summer. A visit takes about an hour.
Zonguldak Mining Museum
The museum in Çınartepe tells the two century coal history of the basin: archive documents from the 1820s onwards, tools and equipment used with the technology of each period, a detailed model showing coal travelling from underground to the surface, and miner figures recreating real working conditions. The Coal Experience Mine next to it has a mine lift simulator recreating the training miners received before going underground. A monument to miners who lost their lives also stands on the museum grounds. It is a good first stop for understanding the city.
Kapuz Beach
West of the city centre, the sandy beach below tall cliffs is Zonguldak's town beach, reached by a short walk or minibus ride from the centre. In summer it is the city's meeting place for swimming, sitting on the shore in the late afternoon and watching the sun set over the Black Sea. The cliffs and breakwaters frame photographs well. When the sea is rough, the flag warnings are followed.
Cehennemağzı Caves
In Karadeniz Ereğli, about 50 kilometres west of Zonguldak, a complex of three caves side by side: the Church Cave, the Heracles Cave and the Ayazma Cave. In the city known in antiquity as Herakleia Pontike, it is remembered as the place where Heracles went down to the underworld in his twelfth labour and brought up the three headed dog Cerberus; Xenophon also writes of passing here during the retreat of the Ten Thousand. It is counted among the important oracle centres of the ancient world. Ereğli Castle and the seafront fit into the same day.
Filyos Bay and the ancient city of Tios
At Filyos in the Çaycuma district, where the Filyos River meets the sea, the ancient harbour city founded by settlers from Miletus in the 7th century BC holds remains from the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods: an acropolis, a theatre, an aqueduct, a harbour and a church. It is one of the ancient cities on the Black Sea coast with no modern town built over it, and excavations have continued since 2006. The theatre set into the hillside and the Byzantine walls on the hill are the best points overlooking the sea. It is very close to the airport and easy to add on an arrival or departure day.
Amasra Castle
Amasra, in Bartın province, is about 50 kilometres from the airport and around an hour and a half by road from Zonguldak, and it is the best known coastal town on the western Black Sea. Walls from the Byzantine and Genoese periods encircle the peninsula that divides two bays and the island of Boztepe joined to it by a bridge; houses and streets still stand inside the walls. The Kemere Bridge, the Byzantine church converted into the Fatih Mosque and the views over the two harbours fit into the same walk. Fish and Amasra salad are the traditional choice for dinner.
