Things to do in Turin
Mole Antonelliana
Begun as a synagogue in 1863 and completed in 1889, the 167 metre tower is the emblem of the city and was for a long time the tallest brick structure in Europe. It houses the National Museum of Cinema, whose exhibition rises on spiral ramps inside the hollow of the dome. A glass lift climbs through the middle of the dome to the roof panorama, with the Alps in view on clear days.
Egyptian Museum
Founded in 1824, the Museo Egizio is the oldest museum in the world devoted only to Egyptian civilisation and its collection is the largest after Cairo. The intact tomb of the architect Kha and his wife Merit, found with their belongings, and the seated statue of King Ramses II are the best known pieces. Since the 2015 refit it spreads over four floors and needs half a day.
Royal Palace of Turin
The 17th century palace on the north side of Piazza Castello was the official residence of the House of Savoy until 1865 and is the centrepiece of the UNESCO listed group of Savoy Residences. The Royal Museums ticket covers the palace together with the armoury, the Sabauda picture gallery and the museum of antiquities. The royal gardens behind the palace are free to walk.
Basilica of Superga
The domed church of 1731 on the 672 metre hill east of the city is the work of architect Filippo Juvarra and holds the tombs of the Savoy kings. The terrace looks down over Turin and the arc of the Alps. The memorial to the 1949 Superga air disaster, in which the city's champion football team died when their aircraft struck the back of the basilica, stands here and is still visited.
Reggia di Venaria
The hunting palace 10 kilometres northwest of the centre was built for the Savoy dukes in 1675, lay in ruin for a long time and reopened in 2007 after an eight year restoration. The 80 metre Gallery of Diana, Juvarra's great stables and the replanted 60 hectare gardens are on the visit. It is 40 minutes by bus from the centre, and weekend exhibition tickets are best booked ahead.
Porta Palazzo Market
The open market on Piazza della Repubblica is among the largest daily outdoor markets in Europe and fills with more than a thousand stalls in the morning. Piedmont cheeses, white truffle in season and Langhe wines are bought here, and the iron and glass Mercato Centrale hall of 1916 beside the market has been turned into a food court. On Saturday mornings the Balon flea market sets up right behind it.
